Chicago Solar Partnership

The Chicago Solar Partnership is an effort spearheaded by ComEd, the City of Chicago, the Chicago Public Schools, and other sponsoring parties to promote awareness about generating power from renewable resources such as photovoltaic (solar), wind, geothermal, gas (methane), and hydro (water) energy.

When ComEd approached us with the goals for this web project, they also required the creation of a brand to encompass the entire effort. You can see our case study on this brand's development on our Chicago Solar Partnership Brand page.
The remaining goals focused on the development of the site's user interface and maintenance capabilities. The target audience is consumers in a position to install renewable power at their facilities, and school children who, with the guidance of their teachers, will derive a valuable education about the ecological impact of renewable energy use. Flash multimedia diagrams and downloadable lesson plans provide insight into the ways that power is converted from natural resources into usable energy. In addition, we were supplied real-time data from numerous photovoltaic installations and had to present these in a meaningful way. We incorporated system output reporting tools for current, daily, and monthly energy totals.

Using some graphical elements from an existing print piece as a starting point, our team set out to create a new interface. Our goals were to encourage exploration, present technical information, and remain inviting to both professional adult and school-aged visitors. The result, which has a laid-back, rural feeling, incorporates hand-lettered navigation and title elements.
Flash presentations are used to create an exciting opening to the site, as well as part of the Watch It Work section, designed to assist teachers in the classroom. Java applets read the real-time data from the solar installations. The website can be maintained remotely from any web browser through the use of a sophisticated content management system.
